About
I will admit, a shrine to the relationship between Axel and Roxas was definitely not the first thing on my mind when I played Kingdom Hearts II. Honestly, I really wanted to make a shrine to Axel because I loved his character. My lovely sister beat me to it however, so I decided to back off from making one since she already had an awesome one in the works. As time went by, I decided I really still wanted to make a shrine to him anyway, and started planning one called Wildfire. I was also considering making a shrine to Roxas with Airi quite some time ago, but our plans for that also fell through. So how exactly did I end up with this shrine? Well, it is quite simple really. The clock tower scene.
Yes, okay. That probably was not the only reason I decided to make this tribute, but it really fired me up to do so. I cried after watching it, and then I realized, I really do like their relationship. I avoided it for the longest time because so many annoying people drove me away from it by going "OMG THEY ARE SO IN LOVE, LAWLS". I did not mind the people who supported them in a romantic relationship, but too many people were shouting declarations they were definitely in love, when I honestly did not see the proof at all. That fact also gave me motivation to make a tribute to their relationship, so I could defend all aspects of it, not just the romance side. I began to like them together romantically more and more, but as of right now, I just support them being partners who are best friends and have the potential to be in love. ("Unfortunately", I am still a Roxas/Olette fanatic thanks to Airi). As for tacking the shrines to both Axel and Roxas individually onto the project, that is mainly because I am a masochist and like to give myself a lot of work. Just kidding. I had already planned out the content for Wildfire and some content for a Roxas shrine, and I decided not to let that go to waste. I downsized both shrines considerably because the focus of Burnout is their relationship, but I thought it would be nice to express my love for both members of Organization XIII individually as well.
I actually created Burnout at some time in November of 2007, but it was not open to the public eye until January 27, 2008. While I was working on the shrine, I noticed that the game fanlisting was up for adoption, and decided to take a shot and apply. To my pleasant surprise, I was chosen to adopt it (very much love to Europa ♥ ♥), and that made me get my butt moving to push this project along. Even at that point, only the multimedia and the relationship section were complete, so Burnout was not actually "finished" until about a month later.
As for the title, I really wanted something that would fit Axel, Roxas, and their relationship. I was browsing my playlist and saw the song "Burnout". I turned it over in my mind for a few minutes, and came to the conclusion that it really worked. Axel and Roxas both end up technically "fading" as they are both Nobodies, and as a result, their relationship ends up doing the same. Of course, that is a pretty depressing way to look at it, but I thought the title really fit that way. I was in conflict between "Burnout" and "The Last Sundown" when making the shrine, but when I was approved to adopt the fanlisting, I decided to use the latter for the fanlisting title. Axel and Roxas spent a lot of their evenings watching the sunset, and they were not able to stay together in the long run, so I thought the title also fit their relationship well.
I also must give lots of credit to Airi, Kara, and Rika for pushing me in the right direction to make the shrine and supporting my decision to do so, even if it came as a bit of surprise to them. I LOVE YOU ALL!
