Twilight Town
After being defeated by Riku, DiZ puts Roxas in a simulated Twilight Town to hold him while Sora’s memories were being restored. He gives him a “new personality” to throw off his pursuers, which probably works well until the last six days before Sora is ready to awaken.Roxas seems to be enjoying himself in Twilight Town, with his friends Hayner, Pence and Olette. The four of them did everything together, and the game begins on the seventh last day of summer vacation. Things were not “perfect”, however, as Roxas had been having strange “dreams” about a boy named “Sora”, and things relating to him. In reality, Roxas was only seeing Sora’s memories in his sleep. Those “dreams” were only the beginning of the weird things to happen to him. Dusk Nobodies began to appear and stole any photo with Roxas in it. Not only that, but they stole the word “photo” as well. Naturally, Roxas and his friends set out to find the thief, as they were being blamed for it!
Roxas tries hard to continue on with a normal life, but as time progresses, more and more things happen that he cannot explain. People who claim to know him keep appearing, time seems to freeze temporarily at random points, the strange creatures, the Keyblade…What did they have to do with him? Why was he the only one seeing any of it? His friends did not really believe him, and Roxas was then sent into a spiraling of depression until he finally hit rock bottom.
He was not supposed to exist?
Hearing that he was not supposed to exist was the breaking point for Roxas. He could not believe what he was hearing was the truth. The more he found out about his existence, the angrier he became. He could not accept the fact that his heart belonged to someone else, that HE was someone else. After meeting Sora in person, Roxas finally gives in on the sixth day and becomes a part of Sora once more.
HAYNER was Roxas’ best friend out of their group of four. The two of them seemed to have a bit of a competition going on, much similar to the relationship between Sora and Riku. However, even when Hayner gets angry as a result of things that Roxas does, he is always quick to forgive him. After Roxas defeats him in the Struggle tournament, Roxas apologizes because he feels really bad about Hayner and the others not being able to go to the beach because he disappeared for the day. Hayner just laughs and tells him to forget about it, and has forgiven him. The two are obviously very close friends, and I think the reason Hayner got so angry was because he did not understand why so many weird things were happening to his best friend that no one could explain, and as a result made Roxas back away from him and the others. I am also willing to bet that it was probably Hayner who organized the investigation of all the strange events occurring to Roxas, even if he did not necessarily believe Roxas’ explanations. Hayner still knew something was wrong, and even though he had no idea what was going on, he just wanted to do what he could to help his best friend. Hayner, sort of like Riku with Sora, seemed like he took pride in looking out for Roxas like an older brother would. Even though he knew Roxas could take care of himself, Hayner wanted to keep an eye on him just in case.
Roxas does not appear to spend a ton of quality time with PENCE except for when the two of them paired off to investigate the seven wonders of Twilight Town. Even so, I think Pence probably looks up to Roxas and the two are still good friends regardless. I cannot say exactly why I think Pence looks up to him, but it is just a feeling I get when I listen to Pence talking to or about Roxas. I guess Roxas is the cool skateboarder in their group, while he is the ‘brains’, so maybe he wishes he could be more like Roxas? Who knows, that is only my speculation. Anyway, when Hayner and Olette were done investigating the seven wonders, Roxas wanted to know what the seventh was. Hayner gets angry and leaves with Olette, but Pence stays behind and follows Roxas to the haunted mansion because he is so determined to find out what it is. Either way, Pence stayed with Roxas when the others went back to work on the report, and I believe it was more than simple curiosity on Pence’s part.
OLETTE is the last of Roxas’ group of friends, but certainly not the least important. Roxas and Olette do not have any alone time at all within the game, but I still believe these two were pretty close just because all four of them hung out together all the time. She tries to drag Roxas to go shopping with her and Pence, and judging by Pence’s reaction, it was probably a common occurrence for her to ask them to go shopping with her. Regardless, she takes Roxas’ question about seeing a girl as an excuse not to go, so I would not doubt he and Hayner tried to get out of it numerous times. Even though Olette does not say much, I feel that she cares about Roxas a lot, just like the rest of his friends. I suppose that since she is a girl who seems to be pretty open with her feelings, it would be more evident to Roxas that she cares more than say, Hayner, who has some issues acting “soft”. I personally support Roxas and Olette in a romantic sense, as I could see them working well together if they were given more time to grow up together without the interference of the Nobodies crashing Roxas’ happiness.
Even after Roxas becomes a part of Sora, the Hayner, Pence and Olette in the REAL Twilight Town are affected. They are all evidently upset over something, and Hayner is obviously pretty angry when Sora, Donald and Goofy stumble into the Usual Spot. I am sure they were all in a bad mood because they did not understand why they were feeling upset, and probably feeling like they were missing a part of themselves. When Sora makes his way to the train station, Hayner and the others show up. Hayner begins to ask him a question, but Pence interrupts and explains that they are there to see him off, because it seems like something they should do. Sora becomes a little down himself, and says that he cannot help but feel like he will never see Twilight Town again. Hayner finally asks Sora if he is sure they have never met, and Sora is positive. He smiles, and then a tear slips down his cheek. Everyone, including Sora himself is surprised, and Olette asks if he is okay. Sora tries to pull himself together, not knowing what came over him all of the sudden. After getting on the train, he tells Donald and Goofy he is sad.
Roxas has not been forgotten. Hayner, Pence and Olette may not be able to remember why they are upset and feeling like something is missing, but their longing feelings for him are still there. Roxas’ own feelings were able to show through, as Sora was not the one who cried and felt sad, it was Roxas. He did not want to leave his friends without being able to say goodbye. He did not want them to forget him and he did not want them to be sad without a reason. Even though they never meet Roxas again, the group of three can take comfort in having Sora around when he comes to visit. Though they can never be together again, the Twilight Town gang will never truly have their bond broken.
