without a place in the world, you understand my pain

Personality

Roxas is a bit more interesting to write about when it comes to his personality than some of the other characters in Kingdom Hearts. He almost has two personalities, as he acts differently during his time in the simulated Twilight Town then he does from what we have seen of him in Organization XIII.

While in Twilight Town, Roxas appears to be your average, carefree, male teenager. He seems to be pretty happy-go-lucky, though not as much as Sora is, but you can see the trait show through numerous times. Roxas enjoys hanging out with his friends Hayner, Pence and Olette, and is willing to do whatever he can for them. Roxas does not want to be a burden for his friends, and therefore feels really bad when he loses the money for the beach that they all worked hard to get and when it looks like he spent the next day with Seifer’s gang without being able to give them an explanation. He hopes they still went to the beach without him, and is disappointed when he finds out that they did not go because it would not be the same without him there too. As weird as Roxas feels about the things that are happening to him, he probably feels twice as bad for the events affecting Hayner, Pence and Olette as well. Roxas is obviously pretty caring, at least when it comes to his friends in this case. He wants them to be happy, even if he is having a tough time.

As time marches forward, Roxas starts to become more and more secluded from the rest of his friends. He becomes almost tormented with his inner conflict. He does not understand what has been happening to him, and since his friends cannot see anything he was seeing, he could not rely on them for support. As a result, he gets quiet, reserved and more drawn back, almost to the point where he cannot sit and laugh with them anymore. When they are all laughing about Hayner exploding from eating too much ice cream, Roxas does not even crack a smile. But who can blame him? He thought he was a normal teenage boy, and only wanted to enjoy himself as a normal teenager with his friends. Roxas probably felt isolated from them at that point because he knew he was different. They were supposed to exist but he was not. Roxas begins to become more like he was when he left Organization XIII. He also appears not to be able to control his anger well. He screams a lot, and ends up taking his anger out violently by trying to attack DiZ or breaking the computer system DiZ was using to control the simulated Twilight Town with his Keyblade. When DiZ finally addresses him, Roxas snaps back at him asking if he is talking to himself or Sora. Roxas is not happy with the truth, and does not know what to do about his feelings other than let it out in anger.

From what has been shown of Roxas while he was in Organization XIII, or at least still wearing the cloak and when he knew he was a Nobody, he seems to have a strong sense of self. He gets angry when Riku addresses him as Sora’s Nobody, and demands that his heart is his own to DiZ when he is again referred to as Sora. Even with his face of confidence, I believe Roxas is also feeling insecure. He yet again does not understand what is going on, why did the Keyblade choose him? Did he really not have a heart? Is he really not supposed to exist? I think all of Organization XIII has some doubts and insecurities, and judging by Roxas’ reaction to the strange events occurring during the Six Days, he probably had some inner conflict while within Organization XIII. He knew he was not going to get answers to quell the strife within him by remaining with them, and risked being punished to leave in order to find some way to calm his anxieties.

Roxas also appears to be cold and shut off, even with his best friend. He also talks like life has no value to him, as when Axel warns him about the punishment of betraying Organization XIII, he simply replies that no one would miss him. Without anyone to rely on and without a purpose in life, existence was probably meaningless to him, especially if he was in the state of conflict that he was in at that point. Living in Twilight Town seemed to have softened Roxas a little, as during the clock tower scene before he became a part of Sora, Roxas seems relaxed having Axel there with him. He even manages to smile and have self-confidence that Sora will find the answer because he is Sora. He wonders how Hayner, Pence and Olette are doing, and has his original best friend by his side, so I think Roxas was able to be somewhat at peace knowing he at least had people who cared about him, even if it was only for a short period of time.

All in all, I believe the trait that Roxas carries with him throughout his whole existence is pensiveness. He spends a good chunk of time thinking and being in his own world, even when his friends are around him. Granted, he does have a lot on his mind with all the weird things going on, and back in the past while he knew he was a Nobody, but I think he and Axel probably spent the most time thinking about and discussing it. Roxas seems to try and comfort Axel by telling him that since you cannot see the heart or tell if it is there, you probably do not even need it, but does not finish his train of thought because he is just thinking out loud. I think he enjoyed talking with Axel because it gave him a chance to release all the conclusions and thoughts he spent so much time thinking about. In the end that probably made Roxas happiest, because while in Twilight Town, he was not able to do that with Hayner, Pence and Olette because they would not understand, much less believe him. Roxas has an intelligent mind, and probably thinks of his situation and the people around him a lot.
