Keyblade

The Keyblade is a very special weapon, which only three people should have the right to wield. Sora, of course, has the most familiar one to us as the “Kingdom Key”, Riku has “Way to the Dawn”, the Keyblade with power over light and darkness, and King Mickey has his own that remains nameless as of right now. The Keyblade is rumored to hold a great power. It can either bring light to all the worlds, or absolute destruction. Sora only technically has one Keyblade, but obtains a variety of “key chains” to change its appearance to other things he gets in different worlds.

So, being Sora’s Nobody, I suppose it is only natural for Roxas to be able to use the Keyblade as well. If he is a part of Sora, he should be able to have the same ability, right? Well, Roxas does not just have a Keyblade. He has TWO Keyblades, something Sora cannot do without being in another form.

Roxas wields both “Oblivion” and “Oathkeeper”, which I find to be a tad ironic. The word ‘oblivion’ can mean either “the state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening” or “the state of being forgotten”. Theses definitions would work well for Roxas, as he is a Nobody who is not meant to exist, and therefore should be forgotten eventually. However, Roxas also has “Oathkeeper”, which is the key chain Sora receives after making a promise to bring Kairi’s lucky charm back to her. A promise to return home. A promise that would not be forgotten. I believe that Roxas’ two Keyblades symbolize his struggle between the fate of a Nobody and wanting to be remembered, wanting a point in his existence. The Keyblades would then represent Roxas’ internal struggle. I also find it slightly amusing that “Oblivion” and “Oathkeeper” have a “dark” and “light” appearance to them respectively, when the Keyblade is supposed to be able to bring light or destruction to the world. Its power depends on the wielder. Roxas, who is searching for truth, yet at the same time remaining in Organization XIII, has two paths to choose from, so even looking at it this way would make the Keyblades symbolize conflict within Roxas. Ultimately, it is the Keyblade that persuades Roxas to leave Organization XIII and walk his long path back to Sora.
