Naminé & Kairi
KAIRI and Roxas were put in touch after Roxas met with Naminé for the first time. As he is falling from the clock tower, he hears Kairi’s voice and mistakes it for Naminé’s. Kairi answers him, but tells him that her name is not Naminé, and then Roxas realizes she is the girl that the boy in his dream likes. Kairi pleads for a name, and when Roxas gives her his, she tries to patiently brush that off and asks for the boy’s name. Being connected to Roxas allowed Kairi to indirectly be connected to Sora, and therefore she gained some of her memories back. When she and Sora meet Roxas and Naminé in The World That Never Was, she does not appear to recognize him, but I do not think that Kairi really cared about Roxas much one way or the other. That is not to say she disliked him, but her main concern was focused on Sora and Riku, and therefore she did not really develop much sympathy for the Nobodies like Roxas. In the end, Kairi probably just viewed Roxas as a new part of Sora that she did not see before and nothing more.
On the other hand, NAMINÉ cares a bit more about Roxas, as she is in a similar situation to him. She is also a Nobody, Kairi’s Nobody to be more specific. Naminé watches over Roxas during his time in the simulated Twilight Town, and even goes against orders in order to see him and attempt to explain the truth to him. She even tells him that she wanted to meet him at least once. I am sure Naminé was probably curious as to what he was like, one because he was also a Nobody like her, and two, he was Sora’s Nobody. Now, that is not to say I think Naminé considers Sora and Roxas the same person, because I believe she knows well that a person and their Nobody are not necessarily alike, and certainly not the same. I believe Naminé just took a liking to him because she was able to feel and understand Roxas’ suffering and confusion, and he ended up being lonely like her. She probably wanted to do what she could to comfort him for that reason. Even though Naminé is the one who tells Roxas he was not supposed to exist, she tries to make up for it by telling him he will not disappear, as he will just become whole. Naminé tries to give him confidence to face what she knows he will have to do and will not like. She also tells him that they will meet again and she will explain everything then, even though she may not know it is him and he may not know it is her. The two are able to meet again in the form of Sora and Kairi when he finally reaches Destiny Islands. When Sora looks up to smile at Kairi, his image changes to Roxas’, and Kairi’s changes to Naminé’s. The two were able to smile at each other and be together after all. As long as Sora and Kairi were together, they would be too. There is a strong wave of support for Roxas and Naminé as a romantic relationship in the online fandom, which could theoretically be possible if their relationship was given time to grow. From the time spent together, I do not think either of them really had time to think about the other in that fashion, and just wanted to depend on each other as friends with a similar fate.
