Sora
Roxas is Sora’s Nobody. Sora disconnects and continues the relationship between Axel and Roxas in certain ways. Though Roxas returning to Sora technically ended Axel being able to talk with Roxas’ consciousness, just by existing, Sora brought Axel as close to Roxas as possible afterwards.
Roxas left Organization XIII in order to find out who he really was, and why the Keyblade chose him. Riku believes that Roxas really just wanted to meet Sora. At first, Roxas really does not like the fact that he is Sora’s Nobody, and wants to believe he has his own heart and being when he confronts the hologram of DiZ shortly before returning to Sora. But hey, who can blame him? Roxas existed for a while without remembering that he was actually a Nobody and was not supposed to exist. But even before his simulated life, Roxas was not happy being addressed as “Sora”. While Roxas fights him, Riku calls out to Sora and Roxas responds immediately, only to then cover his mouth wondering why he said anything at all. Riku then comments how Roxas really is Sora’s Nobody, which just makes Roxas angry.
Roxas does not completely fade when he gives in and becomes a part of Sora again, however, as later on he causes a conflict within him. Sora is the only one who could see Roxas attacking him, and it just looked like Sora randomly disappeared to Donald and Goofy. Sora demands to know who he is, but Roxas does not tell him. The two fight, and Roxas says he wants to know why “he” chose Sora. Roxas may have been referring to DiZ, in which case he probably felt castaway and like no one needed him. But Roxas saw himself as Sora’s equal, if not better, and therefore challenged him. Sora ends up winning their battle, and Roxas’ hood comes off. He simply tells Sora that he makes “a good other” before Sora is returned to his friends.
I think Roxas realized that Sora was not a bad person and that he did not really have to “fade” by becoming a part of him. Roxas was now a part of Sora’s memory, and therefore he technically still exists. Because Roxas gave in and admitted Sora was “a good other”, he finally accepted his fate by looking at the situation differently. If what Riku speculated was true, Roxas was able to meet Sora and was not disappointed, so that was good enough for him. He was finally satisfied with who he was.
On the other hand, Axel does not seem very interested in Sora at first when they are forced together at Castle Oblivion in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. Sora was just a source of entertainment to him, and a way to eliminate Marluxia and Larxene when he needed him to do so. This leads me to believe that either Roxas was not a part of Organization XIII yet, or Axel just did not care about Sora because he did not have a reason to bother with him if he had his friend. Axel was too preoccupied with punishing the traitors of the organization anyway.
However, once Roxas becomes a part of Sora again, Axel’s focus is pointed at Sora. He begins to be less concerned with the goals of Organization XIII, and cares more about seeing his best friend again. For a while, Axel wanted Sora to become a Heartless again so he would be able to have Roxas again. But as time went on, Axel decided to just help Sora out. Axel begins telling him about the organization’s plans until Saïx shows up, and ends up saving Sora by putting all of his energy into one final attack to defeat the hundreds of Dusks they were surrounded by. He even states that he put his whole being into the attack, so he knew what he was doing. Axel was willing to sacrifice himself to save Sora, indirectly saving Roxas. Dying, he apologizes for kidnapping Kairi and then tells Sora where she is. Sora asks him what he was trying to accomplish.
Axel opens a portal for Sora and to go through, and finally completely fades away. Even though Axel died protecting Sora, I do not think he actually minded because he knew his best friend still existed somewhere within Sora. Not only that, but Sora made him feel the same way Roxas did, so he probably felt attached to Sora in a similar way as he did to Roxas. It was pretty evident that Sora made Axel feel the same way as Roxas did, even before he actually mentioned it. He started thinking out loud about hearts and Nobody’s, probably in a similar fashion to how he and Roxas used to talk based on their conversation on the clock tower. Axel also probably figured there was no way he would ever see Roxas again, so there was no reason for him to continue existing anyway, and therefore put everything he had into the attack.
The remaining members of Organization XIII discuss Axel’s death, and Saïx comments that he was a fool for getting killed right before they were so close to finishing Kingdom Hearts. He believed Axel could not stand not having a heart, and that was the only reason he chased after a “friendship” that had no feelings to exist in the first place. His theory is technically possible, as Roxas made him feel like he had a heart, and that could therefore be his drive for wanting his friend around so badly. I would disagree though, only because Axel tells Sora that Roxas was the only person he liked. Saving Sora was the final thing he could do for Roxas, and I believe he did it because of his friend, not because he was unable to stand not having a heart.
