To Regain a Lost Friend
Some time after Roxas is placed in a simulated Twilight Town, Axel is able to track him down. On the 4th Day, everything freezes and Roxas is forced to fight some of the Dusk Nobodies. Once he defeats them, Axel makes his appearance. Roxas looks confused and wonders why the hooded man knows his name, so Axel comments on how Roxas really does not remember him. Lowering his hood, he reveals his face and says his name. Roxas still does not remember him at all. He demands to know what is going on, but Axel laughs and says they do not have time for a Q&A, and he will be coming with him conscious or not. The two fight and Roxas wins. DiZ appears shortly afterwards, and the two try to persuade Roxas not to listen to the other. Unsure as to what to do, he clutches his head and calls out for Hayner, Pence and Olette. Roxas then finds himself back in the struggle tournament like nothing had ever happened.At the end of the 5th Day, Roxas intangibly finds himself in the White Room of the mansion. He looks around, seeing drawings of familiar things from his dreams, and then pauses on a picture of him and Axel. Naminé tells him it is because the two are best friends, which makes him reply with a “very funny” as if she is joking around. He struggles with himself, trying to find out who he really is.
Axel is in a meeting with the remaining members of Organization XIII some time between when he leaves Roxas until before the 6th Day. The other members wish to punish Roxas for being a traitor to the organization, but Axel protests, saying he is not a traitor. Axel tries to cover for Roxas by saying he just is not able to come back yet, but the other members do not buy it. Xaldin throws once of his spears at Axel, but he does not move physically or in mindset. He threatens to destroy Axel if he does not punish Roxas accordingly, and a ball of energy begins to form aimed at Axel. He looks down, telling them to use the Dusks, but Xaldin does not stop until Axel gives in and says he will do it.
On the 6th Day, Axel appears to Roxas once again. He tells him about the orders he has been given if Roxas refuses to come back with him, and Roxas slowly says, “But…we’re best friends…right?” Axel agrees and begins to say he does not want to be turned into a Dusk when his brain comprehends what Roxas just said. He then gets excited, but stops himself to make sure Roxas really remembers. He asks what their boss’ name is, but Roxas cannot recall, and the two prepare to fight. Time is then stopped and Roxas is able to escape. When Axel is able to move, he appears upset and comments how the Roxas he knows is long gone. Axel obviously was excited that Roxas remembered him, and probably got his hopes up that he would finally have his best friend back. Extremely disappointed, Axel makes up his mind.
Axel and Roxas have one last confrontation within the basement of the mansion. Roxas once again has to fight more Nobodies until Axel appears. His demeanor has completely changed; Axel is obviously annoyed. Actually, annoyed would be an understatement. His anger explodes and a ring of fire surrounds both of them. Axel challenges Roxas one final time, but he loses once again. Worn out, and most likely still very disappointed, Axel is barely managing to stand. Roxas then remembers their conversation before he left Organization XIII and says Axel’s name softly. Axel looks up, breathing hard, and gives his best friend a half smile. He says that they should meet in the next life, to which Roxas agrees, but Axel disappears into the darkness.
