The Relationship

Again, please note that the following section has a lot of my own speculation and opinions, and not everything stated here is fact. I am in no way saying I am correct, only explaining what I believe to be true. I am going to address three possible aspects of their relationship and give my thoughts on each. My final words as a whole are located in the finale.

I can almost definitely say that the two of them considered each other PARTNERS for at least some time. Axel and Roxas were closer than any of the other members of Organization XIII, and they probably carried out “missions” together when possible. They are both working for the same group, and are generally considered the same ‘rank’, so I think the two of them being partners is quite logical. Not only that, but when Axel says goodbye to Roxas, he addresses him somewhat affectionately as “partner” rather than by his name. Unfortunately, not much of their time together within Organization XIII is shown, and therefore I cannot draw any more facts to support the two of them being partners. Hopefully with the release of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (I am sure you are getting sick of reading that by now if you have read a few other pages) there will be more to add to this part of their relationship.

The most obvious type of relationship between Axel and Roxas would probably be FRIENDS. According to Naminé, Axel and Roxas were “best friends”, so I am going to assume that the two probably were. When Roxas asks Axel about the two of them being best friends, he agrees as well, so I am assuming that is what they considered themselves at the very least. Judging by the way Axel acts, it would seem to be true anyway. Roxas was the only person he liked, he enjoyed being around him, the two spent time talking while watching sunsets, etcetera. From what is known about their past, they seem to do things that best friends would do under the circumstances they are in. Axel and Roxas appear to trust each other, and their relationship is noticeably different from any other relationship within Organization XIII. Going by their conversation on the clock tower, they talk about their thoughts on hearts, Nobodies, goals or whatever else. If nothing else, the two of them are probably very good friends.

Lastly, a very popular relationship choice between Axel and Roxas is the two of them as LOVERS. Now before I start talking about this, I want to restate that I am in no way against the two of them being in love. Honestly, if there was proof of it, I would be all for it. Of course I do support characters together that have no proof, but the two of them just do not fit that exception for me right now enough to say I "ship" them. The only reason I get irritated is because many people declare that they are definitely in love without a second thought. That has really turned me away from the fandom of the two of them being in any kind of romantic relationship, alongside the fact that I already support Roxas with Olette. I love the relationship between Axel and Roxas to death, and I would be happy if they were in love! However, I am not going to shout declarations that they are for sure either. I personally do not think there is enough evidence to firmly support that conclusion as of this point in time, especially because Roxas does not appear to feel as strongly for Axel as Axel does for him. I do not say this because Nobodies cannot feel anything, especially something like love, as I think members such as Axel, Roxas and Demyx show plenty of emotion. I do not believe the idea is impossible though; because the two were probably pretty close and technically do have the potential to be more than just friends. I still honestly do not think Roxas was into the relationship enough, especially because he gives up Organization XIII, which is also giving up ties with Axel, to find answers to his questions. Axel was not enough to satisfy his existence. The two of them also probably had other things on their mind such as their fate as Nobodies, hearts, and missions to be concerned with a relationship more than friends. I personally do not see this happening, but I will not say it is impossible either.
