Organization XIII
Organization XIII is a group of thirteen (though, a fourteenth member has been announced) Nobodies. Nobodies exist between light and darkness, and they are created alongside a Heartless when a person loses their heart. They also do not have hearts and cannot feel emotion of any kind. Most Nobodies cannot even speak, nonetheless keep a human form, but the members of Organization XIII are almost like a “higher level” Nobody.“ORGANIZATION XIII - An inscrutable black-coated organization that makes its appearance with Nobody underlings. As their name implies, they were comprised of 13 members, but Sora and friends have practically reduced their members to half.” – Game booklet (KH2)The organization began when Ansem the Wise and six scientists (Xehanort, Dilan, Braig, Even, Ienzo and Elaeus) started a project to research the heart and how it worked. Ansem was particularly interested in the heart, almost to the point where his obsession was unhealthy. After conducting many experiments, they eventually decided to use themselves as test subjects for their research. After discussing things with King Mickey, Ansem realized his research was unethical and shut down the project immediately. His group of six followers did not agree with giving up, and continued researching secretly. They were then disconnected from themselves and turned into Nobodies.
Xehanort’s Nobody, Xemnas created Organization XIII along with the Nobodies of the other five scientists – Xigbar, Xaldin, Vexen, Lexaeus and Zexion. Their goal was to become whole once more, and in order to do that they needed hearts. In order to find their own hearts that they had lost, they needed the power of Kingdom Hearts, which is where all hearts are born and gathered. While building their numbers with the addition of Saïx, Axel, Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia, Larxene and finally Roxas, they continued their plans to gather large amounts of hearts to create their own Kingdom Hearts. Hundreds of Heartless were right there in front of them to use, however, the only way the hearts could be freed was by using the Keyblade. Therefore, they stayed behind the scenes while Sora defeated the Heartless and gathered the released hearts.
Eventually Xemnas is the only remaining member, and almost completes his Kingdom Hearts. Ansem the Wise then sacrifices his life to destroy it. Sora and Riku eventually defeat Xemnas before he can try to “start over”, bringing the end of Organization XIII.
Axel meets Roxas on the day that Roxas gets his name from Xemnas. The two sat on the clock tower in Twilight Town and watched the sunset that evening, and from that point until Roxas leaves Organization XIII, the two Nobodies form a strong bond. Unfortunately, the time that Roxas spends within the organization has yet to be shown, so until the release of Kingdom Hearts 385/2 Days, I will not be able to provide much information on how Axel and Roxas became closer.
Roxas eventually decides to leave Organization XIII to pursue answers to his questions. He walks by Axel, who is leaning against a building outside of their stronghold, without saying anything. Axel then asks, “Your mind’s made up?” Roxas pauses and then responds sharply that he has to know why the Keyblade chose him. Axel suddenly becomes animated, sounding worried for his friend. If Roxas turned on the organization, they would destroy him. There is a brief silence, followed by Roxas claiming that no one would miss him anyway. He walks away without looking back at his best friend. Axel sighs, watching him leave.
