The Finale
I have stated most of my opinions all over this section of Burnout already, but I feel I need a page to wrap up and clearly define what I really think is important about their relationship. Because there is not a ton of factual information about the relationship between Axel and Roxas, majority of it has to be speculated There are many views of their relationship, and in no way do I think I am “correct” with anything that is not a fact. But that is what makes them so interesting to me. I am open for almost anything between them, and every amount of time I spend thinking about them, I think up something new. This is just what they are to me.I believe Roxas really does bring out the best in Axel, as he seems calmer and happier when Roxas is around. Just seeing his face light up when he thought Roxas remembered him and everything else about Organization XIII really made me smile. Roxas gave Axel some sort of meaning to his “not supposed to have existed” life. He was just glad to be friends with him. On the other hand, though not necessarily to the same intensity, Roxas probably was happy to have Axel around as well. If they sat and watched the sunset the day Roxas got his name, Axel probably stuck by him and supported him right from the beginning. Roxas most likely had no idea what was going on when he first was born, and would therefore appreciate support from Axel. If nothing else, I believe their relationship grew on that idea.
It appears to be that Axel has become rather dependent on Roxas being there with him. Roxas made him feel like he had a heart, so of course he would want him around as much as possible for both selfish and caring reasons. I believe the members of Organization XIII feel insecure because they want to become whole once more, and Axel is no exception to that. Feeling like he was whole was enough to satisfy Axel for the time being, but not enough for Roxas. He wanted answers as to why he was chosen by the Keyblade and to who he really was, and was not patient enough to wait for answers to come to him. Roxas eventually becomes not dependent on Axel at all (assuming he was at least a little bit in the beginning before he learned the ropes so to speak), which is why I think he was able to “give him up” in a sense. I am not saying Roxas did this easily, as it could have been an extremely hard decision for him. Either way, he ultimately decided to leave.
This obviously did not leave Axel very content, as he did attempt to stop Roxas before he left. As much as I believe that Axel probably wanted Roxas to be happy and have his answers, Axel naturally wants to be happy as well. His “selfishness” probably stems from that idea. If he could have it his way, he would most likely be able to be with Roxas while his friend found his answers. Of course Axel could have technically gone with Roxas, but I think he knew he would only be in the way rather than fearing some kind of punishment as a consequence. It was something Roxas had to find on his own, and going with him would only hinder his friend. So even though it was hard, Axel had to let Roxas go.
Their relationship is something I would probably classify as “tragic” even though Roxas does not technically die. The two of them were really good friends and enjoyed being together, but due to their circumstances and the fate of being a Nobody, they were forced apart. I believe the two may have been able to be inseparable if they lived normal lives and grew closer under a different set of circumstances. Regardless of the fact that Axel was never able to see Roxas again before he died, I think he was able to fade away relatively content because he put all he had left into saving Sora, which to him was most likely indirectly saving Roxas. As long as Sora was still alive, Roxas would still “exist”, and therefore I do not think Axel regretted his sacrifice.
Overall, it would be nice to think that the two Nobodies that were unable to continue their friendship are able to meet again in the next life…
