Personality
I believe that the most evident character trait that Axel has is his tendency to be fiery and wild. Putting aside the fact that he actually controls the element of fire, he seems to have little control over his anger levels once he is fed up with something. After realizing that Roxas was probably not going to return to Organization XIII, Axel explodes when he meets up with his friend once more. He resorts to fighting with the only person he actually liked, and is practically seething with anger. I cannot say his reaction really surprised me, even if he did seem quite calm at first, because he seemed like the type to get really angry if allowed. I do not think Axel would have listened to any type of reasoning or rationale while residing in his anger and determination to bring Roxas down; he was probably beyond the point of listening. Once Roxas returns to Sora, Axel’s actions begin to become unpredictable to Organization XIII, as he starts to become disloyal to them. He is willing to do almost anything to regain Roxas, giving him some wild tendencies. Axel becomes pretty impulsive, going to see Sora, and even his final sacrifice for him. Even though Axel was a “loyal” member of Organization XIII, he still strikes me as the kind of person who does not like to be held down or given instructions. In Chain of Memories, Axel does not hesitate to kill Vexen on impulse or dispose of Larxene and Marluxia. Of course he viewed them as traitors who needed to be punished, but I doubt Axel thought twice about getting rid of the three of them once he decided on it. Once Axel has his mind set on something, he is virtually uncontrollable until he reaches his goal in mind.Axel has also proven to be rather cunning and deceiving in Chain of Memories. He is definitely not stupid, that is for sure. He was able to maintain a poker face and even gain both Marluxia and Larxene’s trust while secretly planning to destroy both them and their plan. Though Larxene and Marluxia were able to catch on to Axel eventually, it was not until it was too late, so Axel was virtually successful in deceiving them. Axel is also able to avoid the rest of Organization XIII while trying to get Roxas back, and eventually aiding Sora. He may seem to act without thinking and appear impulsive, but I believe Axel has a good head on his shoulders. He knows how to work people to achieve his own goals. Of course that makes him rather selfish too, but I do not blame him for having an “every man for himself” approach to life, as he is a Nobody.
Axel appears to be the kind of person that is extremely driven by his emotions; despite the fact he is not supposed to have any. In Kingdom Hearts II, almost everything he does is a result of his friendship with Roxas, from his extreme anger when Roxas will not return to Organization XIII, to sacrificing his existence for Sora in the end. He is one of the members that really make you question whether or not Organization XIII actually has feelings. His drive to get his best friend back seems so extreme, and that made me wonder if it was possible for them to have feelings despite not having a heart. He could have been willing to sacrifice himself simply on the fact he could not stand feeling empty, but I think he was able to put his existence on the line because he cared a lot about Roxas. Being driven by his emotions would theoretically work well with being impulsive and wild as well.
If Axel were brought up in a different situation, I believe more of his “goofball” personality would end up showing through. He seems to have the potential to be a rather laid back guy, especially because of the things he says like greeting people with “yo”. Of course, it is probably a bit hard to act and feel that way when you are constantly reminded that you are not supposed to exist and you have no heart so you should not act that way in the first place. Regardless, Axel displays that he is all up for fun and games; well, entertainment rather, in Chain of Memories. He claims to only care if Sora is around because he is a source of entertainment. If you look at Axel when he is around Roxas, being laid back tends to show through a bit more. He is able to be relaxed while sitting on the clock tower with his friend, so I am assuming he can probably forget about his own situation and be more carefree. Maybe that is the reason he enjoyed spending time with Roxas; he could be more like himself.
Lastly, Axel has shown signs of having a pensive side to him as well. Simply looking at the clock tower scene, he just started thinking out loud about Nobodies, hearts, himself and Roxas. This sort of surprised me, as it was not something that stood out to me from Chain of Memories or Kingdom Hearts II, but I believe it is there. I suppose that being a Nobody would cause one to have a lot on their mind, and I do think that Axel spends a good chunk of time thinking about it. Judging how when Roxas begins to talk about how he wonders if it matters if hearts are important, Axel looks curious and wants to know more, the two of them probably had deep discussions about serious subjects such as the heart and their supposed lack of one. Axel could just like talking, but I believe that he enjoys and takes time to think about himself, his situation and the world.
